The great and the good of the home entertainment industry gathered for the fourth and final year at Tobacco Dock for the 38th annual BASE Awards, with 22 awards handed to distributors, retailers, media owners and suppliers from across the industry’s spectrum over the course of the evening.
Hosted by broadcaster and TV presenter Claudia Winkelman, the 2018 BASE Awards were this year attended by more than 900 guests from 100 member and non-member organisations, with surprises on the night including a special performance by the Disney Voices Choir to celebrate The Walt Disney Company winning the coveted Title of the Year award with Beauty And The Beast, and a 17-foot long Tyrannosaurus Rex gracing the stage to mark Universal Pictures taking the Distributor of the Year award.
Guests took a moment to remember the much-loved Colin Lomax, who sadly passed away over Christmas, with Spirit Entertainment’s Rob Callow and Manga Entertainment’s Jerome Mazandarini taking to the stage to collect an Outstanding Contribution to the Industry award on behalf of Colin’s wife Lisa, also in attendance.
This year also saw the introduction of new awards intended to reflect changing consumer and category trends, whilst also rewarding those in the industry embracing the need to innovate and take risks. Indeed, the inaugural winner of the Creative Marketing Initiative of the Year award was eOne, whose campaign for I, Daniel Blake was celebrated for embracing that innovative approach.
Universal Pictures led the charge this year, taking home four awards across the evening, with The Walt Disney Company snagging three and Arrow Films, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group each collecting two awards. The renewed focus at this year’s awards on retailers contribution to the category also saw HMV and Amazon take home awards in the physical, digital and online physical retailer categories whilst HMV and Sky also walked away with the Physical Retailer Innovation and Digital Retailer Innovation awards respectively. Additional well-deserved winners on the night included Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Signature Entertainment and Sainsbury’s.
This year’s generous Awards sponsors included: Arrow Films, CSG, Lionsgate, Obviously Creative, Official Charts Company, Pops, Signature Entertainment, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Studiocanal, Technicolor, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Pictures, Visual Data, The Walt Disney Company, Warner Bros. and West 10.
The 2018 BASE Awards raised in excess of £6,300 for charity partner Action for Children.
