December 16th, 2022: The Nordic ‘Hitlist’ end of year rankings have revealed the most downloaded and rented films across Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland each week for the last 12 months. The rankings show while blockbusters consistently perform well, the Scandinavians keep coming back for homegrown content!
The ‘Hitlist’ is compiled from data gathered across platforms such as Apple TV, Blockbuster, Rakuten TV, SF Anytime and Viaplay Store, representing the vast majority of retailers in these territories.
Local titles have dominated across the last 12 months, as the Hitlist has become the definitive up-to-the-minute guide of what films are trending right now in the homes of Scandinavians.
Homegrown content shines in Norway, Denmark, and Finland as the number one spots of the year are taken by native titles. For Norway, the multi-award-winning and Oscar-nominated The Worst Person in the World (Verdens Verste Menneske) was in the charts an impressive 25 weeks. The Burning Sea (Nordsjøen) was also in the top three as it stayed in the Norwegian charts for 15 weeks throughout 2022.
Featured in Denmark’s top ten for the most weeks was the local animated film, Checkered Ninja 2 (Ternet Ninja 2) with Danish drama, Rose, securing a place in the top 5. Meanwhile, in Finland, Class Reunion 3 (Luokkakokous 3: Sinkkuristeily) stayed in the charts for a staggering 28 weeks.
In Sweden, two local films in particular have been popular with film fanatics. The Emigrants (Utvandrarna) – a Swedish film based on the book by Vilhelm Moberg portraying emigrating from Sweden to the United States in the early 1850s – and I Am Zlatan (Jag Är Zlatan), the story of an underdog turned sporting legend, take third and fourth place on the official Swedish Hitlist.
However, key blockbuster titles are performing just as well in the Nordics. The Northman, a film heavily influenced by Nordic mythology, was a popular title in both Norway and Sweden taking the 9th spot in both. In tandem, iconic blockbuster franchises such as ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘No Time To Die’ also did well across Scandinavia, with Spider-Man holding the number one spot for 16+ weeks across Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland.
