It is with deep sadness that BASE shares the tragic and unexpected passing of Simon Heller at the age of 64. A cherished former colleague during BASE’s earlier days as the British Video Association (BVA), Simon leaves behind a loving wife and two daughters, along with a legacy that touched countless lives within the home entertainment industry.
Simon was held in the highest regard by his colleagues and peers, not only for his professional acumen but also for his warmth, wit and unwavering passion for his work. Over a remarkable career spanning decades, Simon played a pivotal role in the evolution of the video and home entertainment category, from VHS and DVD to Blu-ray and digital formats. His dedication to his craft and his ability to inspire those around him left an indelible mark on the industry.
From his early days as Marketing Manager at Warner Vision, where he forged strong relationships with clients and colleagues, to leading the industry’s transition to DVD at the BVA, Simon exemplified the qualities of professionalism, creativity and leadership. His contributions were instrumental in delivering campaigns that set benchmarks for the sector.
Paul Archer, a longtime colleague, reflected: “Simon was an absolute star when leading the industry’s initiative into the new DVD format. He communicated expertly, built respect at all levels, and drove forward with such enthusiasm. Working with him was a joy – his influence on my career and life is something I’ll always treasure.”
Another colleague, Louise Vaughan, fondly remembered his time promoting Blu-ray: “Simon’s acerbic wit and infectious enthusiasm made every day fun. He truly represented the phenomenal industry he was so passionate about.”
